Dave’s Top 10 of 2010.
So far up until this point, I’ve lived enjoyed a good long 20 years. Two decades. Sure that sounds like a long time and to be honest when I think about how I’m no longer a teenager I get a little scared. But fortunately thanks to advances in my old enemy modern science, that barring some unforeseen circumstance I’m assured at least another 59 years of life of this complex but comparatively easy existence.
My 20th year of life 2010 was certainly a big one and I’d go as far as to say the best year of my life so far.
1. What always promised to be a challenge (and I can assure you it was) also turned out to be one of the most enjoyable and memorable things I have ever done. My take on Man Vs Wild, which I aptly titled Dave Vs Wild saw camera man Jase, hiking/camping connoisseur Pat Holcombe and I trek into the wilds of the wintry King Lake National Forest in order to film a comedy video of me surviving in the wilderness despite myself having never even been camping. We walked a lot that day and really struggled to find food but thankfully Pat knew a couple of things that I could eat and the video turned out really well. We had a fire and built a shelter and for the most impressive thing that despite him having access to a tent, Jase stayed in the shelter with me all night. It was dark for about 14 hours but we made it through the cold night before returning to civilization. Just for the record I didn’t eat anything other than bugs and leaves whilst in the forest. Mission complete.
2. The second biggest achievement for myself this year was performing my debut Melbourne International Comedy Festival show The Dave Warneke Experience. To be honest I did the show as a challenge that was documented in episode 6 of my online comedy show The Dave Warneke Experience. I’d done a few comedy spots before but it was a huge step up to try and write and perform a one hour solo show. Fortunately I got some great response and some big audience turn outs so I didn’t go broke. I have continued to perform comedy all year and have booked myself in to do a brand new show ‘Semi Musical Adventure’ at the 2011 Comedy Festival in April at The European Bier Cafe.
3. Because of my comedy Festival show one lazy Autumn day I got a call from someone at The ABC asking if I could come in and do a comedy audition for upcoming ABC TV comedy shows. I of course said “hell yes” and the lady sent me of all things an Ally Macbeal script to learn.
My dreams of Hollywood super stardom were slightly deflated when the audition consisted of reading the script with a lady in front of an old camcorder but my enthusiasm and surety of becoming a super star was rejuvenated when I got a part as a student on the ABC show The Librarians. My mother who is a Librarian was excited as she watches the show. Surprisingly it took two days to film the two small scenes I was in, in one of which I had a line about Back To The Future. I was very impressed with the whole operation and was surprised to see that it takes about 70 people on set to make a show like that happen properly. I took it as a compliment that everyone else in the scene had to get dressed by the costume department as they didn’t look studenty' enough. I on the other hand was allowed to wear the outfit I had turned up in as the costume ladies rather liked it. BAM!
4. This one is going to sound rather lame but one of the best things I did this year was start a diary. I started it on a whim as one of my favourite authors Danny Wallace (he wrote the book Yes Man, the true story of his life that became the Jim Carey film) suggested that diaries are cool! And indeed they are. I thought I’d probably abandon the routine after one entry but I’ve been pretty consistent for months now. It’s good to look back at little things that happened months ago that I otherwise would have forgotten about. Thanks Danny.
5. Another random call I got from a stranger from a television station was from Channel V. Sadly they weren’t asking me to be on their network but rather were telling me I’d won two tickets to see a secret side show of one of the worlds greatest bands Kasbian. I’d just entered a competition online. I’d already seen them in January at The Big Day Out and had tickets to see their real show at Festival Hall but this was even better. It was small and intimate and I even got treated as a VIP and got free drinks and food.
6. Another thing that I claim to have won is a job as a Quiz Meister Trivia Host. I cheerfully signed up to audition a few months back now but was surprised to see that so had 30 or so other extroverted types. I felt I had no chance when Pete the boss said there was only one job going and I felt I had no chance as I was quite hung-over and the standard was very high. Fortunately he picked his favourite 4, one of whom was me and since then has given us all jobs. I started doing fill in’s around town before taking over a show at the Manningham hotel in Bulleen. The show had been running for some months and apparently had started well but had been on a steep decline and by the time I took over it was quite dead. I kept turning up and getting paid and made friends with the bar guys but out of 8 weeks I was only able to run it twice! In 2011 I’ve got a new show at the awesome Richmond pub The Royston. Check it out Wednesdays at 8pm.
7. I enjoyed Uni in 2009 but felt it got even better this year. I’m studying Drama and Media so it’s always bound to be fun and not that hard but this year was great. Hanging out with the drama guys/ girls and performing a show that was essentially about nothing, but in an artistic wanky sort of way rather than a Seinfeld kind of way was fun. At the end of the semester some of us took a drunken trip to the beach where in true Dave Warneke fashion I drank to excess and made a fool of myself. Highlight included unclipping girls bras through their clothes and having a heated discussion about who was better David Bowie or Freddy Mercury. Of course I was on team Bowie. I can’t remember much but from all other accounts it was a good night.
8. At the end of last year I joined a band that an old and extremely talented friend Jordan White was forming. He was putting together different musicians that he has met in his music filled life and with 10 or so other members we made a band called Cacophony Society. A large orchestral rock sort of band. We did some great things this year including road tripping to Wagga Wagga to play our first gig. Did some recording with a man named Tony Salter whom I’m happy to say worked on the Spice Girls third album. Oh hell yeah. And had a drunken weekend at the beach, which once again involved me getting embarrassingly drunk. We played quite a few shows and I can say that I am more proud of this bands music than any other musical thing I’ve done in my life.
9. Another highlight of the year was way back in January when my parents went to Egypt and all I did was eat good food and watch episode after episode of Skins. Work was done for a month or so and there were 0 responsibilities.
10. I’ve always wanted to spend a night in a log cabin and in 2010 I ticked that bad boy off my bucket lists when I went away for a wintry weekend to the Walhalla log cabin. It didn’t have electricity but it was a great experience.
I can only hope that 2011 will be just as kind to me. And then every year after that until my final year when I’m 79 in 2069, where the year sounds so humorously close to a crazy 69 orgy involving 20 couples I will be happy to die a rich, rich man…. Literally and metaphorically that is.
